Naming your company - The Chicken or the Egg

Do you name your company or website first and then go looking for a domain name? The problem these days is that so many domain names are already taken. I believe that you need to look for a domain name first, register it and then name your company accordingly. This way you will ensure that you have the domain name. If you disagree with me, please leave a comment.

Michael McDerment wrote a vary good article over at Vitamin about how to name your company:

He says:

So what makes a good name? There are five main characteristics:

  1. It’s easy to remember
  2. It’s easy to spell and requires no explanation
  3. It describes your business category
  4. It describes your benefit
  5. It describes your difference

When GrabaGoodDomain chooses domain names for your company or website we get our people to keep above principles to these in mind. This insures that they suggest good names that will sell your site or service. People will know what you do even before visiting your site. When you see GrabaGoodDomain you already have an idea of what we do. So give us a try! We are positive that you will be happy.

  • Those five rules are too general and well know. Today is very hard to achieve number 3 specially if you want to register .com domain. I think that verbose domain name is not so important as people think. Look at del.icio.us. Is hard to remember, requires explanations where in the name dots come. Doesn’t describe category and benefit … it’s only different and this is most important.

  • Thanks for your comments Ivan. The things you mention is the exact reasons we started GrabaGoodDomain
